New Fiji Calender

Calendars target visitors

By ANA NIUMATAIWALU
Wednesday, December 10, 2008

IF you can't get tourists to visit certain parts of Fiji, you can always take it to them in the form of a calendar, says former resident and Exodus production director Clinton Bernard.

Mr Bernard recently launched his calendar featuring local models called Fijian Island Girls or FIG.

He said the initial idea after visiting Fiji after a lapse of four-year was to establish a magazine.

He said he was surprised to come back and find so many magazines in the market.

"I wanted to put a youth magazine in the market featuring our local models but when I returned to my surprise there were so many local editions out already," Mr Bernard said.

"This calendar acknowledges local girls and their diversity a mixture of the different cultures in the country.

"For me this is my way of expressing myself and the good memories I have had as a child growing up in Fiji and what we want to attract tourists to the country.

Mr Bernard said the photographer who took the shots was Tyrone Fitzgerald.

"Most of the stuff we shot was done in the villages.

"We are targeting the United States and Australia markets."

Pacific Harbour Fashion

Kruse-ing shoreline fashion

By Irene Manueli
Saturday, December 06, 2008

IT's time to give the popular 'z' dress code a shake-up, says fashionista Courtney Kruse.

After all, "it's getting to be monotonous," she reasoned.

The spirited 26-year-old fashion designer of Samoan heritage hopes her creations will provide the impetus for locals to shift from blasÚ bula.

She is among the 12 'emerging designers' who will bare themselves, through their creations that is, for the critique of established designers, fashion editors and the stylishly-inclined at the Fiji Fashion Week today.

Courtney is not exactly a babe in the waters though.

She shares creative credit with Horace Gock of Staying Alive and Herman Chung of Xoolu for UBR Wear.

She was also a runner-up in a designers contest years ago in which she was placed fourth in a category that was won by renowned designers Hupfeld Hoerder and Sisifa Fifita.

Despite her experience, it's only this year that Courtney has spawned her very own brand, Shorelines; hence her listing in the Emerging Designers category, under which she has four labels.

La Moana; inspired by her paternal grandmother Moana who introduced her to fashion with her love of mumu, is her collection of elegant, evening wear for ladies, Local Boy is the line of men's corporate wear, Salulu is her plus-size range which includes maternity wear and mumu, and Lulu Lailai is, as the name denotes, her children's collection.

The best of these labels will be among the 12 pieces to be sashayed on Fiji's high fashion runway this evening.

The last few months have been a frenzied time for Courtney.

Aside from pushing her creative juices into overdrive for her labels, she set up Shorelines Fiji Limited to manage her designs, and oversees her design commitments at her partner's Uprising Resort in Pacific Harbour.

FIJI PALMS Pacific Harbour

A TOURIST industry executive says the timeshare concept is expected to stimulate economic growth in times of political and economic instability in the country.

Jim Sherlock, chair of the Pacific Harbour Tourism Association says there are only four timeshare ventures and so far they has proved to be a success being the fastest growing segment of the tourism industry worldwide.

The Fiji Palms Beach Club and Resort is the oldest and largest timeshare apartment in the country with more than 400 owners across the globe from England to the remotest parts of the United States.

On Wednesday, Fiji Palms opened its new extension of 26 two-bedroom units at a total cost of $3.5 million at Pacific Harbour from the 14 units it previously had.

Mr Sherlock said Fiji Palms' extension demonstrated investors still had faith in the timeshare concept and it was the best way of stimulating the economy to counter the global financial crisis.

Mr Sherlock, who is also the owner of The Lagoon Resort in Deuba, said the concept was not easily influenced by political and economic instability.

Nadi Bay paddlers prove to be best

FIJI Outrigger hosted its season final regatta for 2008 on Saturday where the Nadi Bay Canoe Club paddled it way to success.

The final regatta hosted by FO was a changeover race that saw all five teams start from Suva foreshore and paddle their way to Pacific Harbour.

This was the first time Fiji Outrigger hosted a changeover race over the 45-kilometre distance.

Five affiliated clubs of Fiji Outrigger each put forward a mixed team of 10 paddlers.

All teams raced in the new Fijian designed and built "Mana" canoe which was launched in early 2007 with Samoa adopting this canoe design for the South Pacific Games.

FO reminded all current, past and new paddlers that the sprint season will begin in mid-February.

That will lead up to Fiji Outrigger's largest paddling event, The Wai Tui Fiji Outrigger International that is scheduled to run from April 10-13.

Following that, the V6 and V1 marathon season will run from May to October.
